Underground Fire: Hope, Sacrifice, and Courage in the Cherry Mine Disaster by Sally M. Walker

Interior & jacket design for middle-grade nonfiction title

All aspects of the design of UNDERGROUND FIRE emphasize the Cherry Mine disaster in 1909. The text block is narrow and low on the page with coal dust spread along the top as well as worked into the chapter opener text, running foot, and subheads throughout. The chapter outlining the exact moment of disaster knocks out of the black texture to reinforce the shifting perspective of the story and the inclusion of archival photographs and time-appropriate font styles further help the reader feel immersed in this moment of history.

I also worked on Sally Walker’s SINKING THE SULTANA in 2017 and BOUNDARIES in 2014.
