BOUNDARIES: How the Mason-Dixon Line Settled a Family Feud and Divided a Nation By Sally M. Walker

Interior & jacket design for middle-grade nonfiction title

BOUNDARIES required a lot of design input and attention to detail to ensure the complicated technical content was accessible to a middle-grade audience. The interior styles include delicate serifs and map-related ornamentation, which evoke both the time period and the original map Mason and Dixon had been commissioned to draw. The interior text had multiple levels of information which varied in length throughout the book and required a consistent yet fluid design approach. The pacing of archival photographs was very important to the story and the commissioned maps needed extensive art direction to ensure accuracy. By creating a digital collage on the jacket, I was able to show depth and complexity, despite most of the available imagery being flat scans of original documents and journals. The result is something cohesive and compelling that is reflective of the incredible and intricate story inside.

I also worked on other titles by Sally Walker: SINKING THE SULTANA in 2017 and UNDERGROUND FIRE in 2022.
