THE WHYDAH by Martin W. Sandler

Interior & jacket design for nonfiction title

The timeframe of THE WHYDAH made it a very interesting design challenge, since the book spans the almost two hundred years between the ship’s wreck in the early 1700s to its recovery in the late 1900s. The design of the interior needed to appropriately highlight centuries-old paintings and illustrations as well as decades-old underwater photography, which all needed special pre-production attention. I was able to digitally create many textures and ornaments for the interior to evoke the time period without interrupting the flow the narrative. The jacket art successfully speaks to the location of the wreck off Cape Cod, while also highlighting the pirate theme with a complicated, hand-altered foil stamp on the title and coins.

THE WHYDAH was a finalist for the 2018 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults, is a ALSC 2018 Notable Children’s Book, and is a Junior Library Guild Selection.

Other Martin Sandler titles I’ve worked on include APOLLO 8 and IRON RAILS, IRON MEN, AND THE RACE TO LINK THE NATION.
