WILLOW by Tonya Cherie Hegamin

Interior design & art direction for illustrated jacket OF young-adult historical novel

The interior design of WILLOW reflects the narrative, which is told by two African-American young adults on either side of the Mason-Dixon line in 1848. The main text is simple and elegant to complement the literary tone of the book, with ornaments and initial caps to distinguish voice shifts, along with a distinct style for journal excerpts. The part openers provide the real pause between major plot moments, and the part numbers move closer to the center of the page as the characters themselves begin to interact. The jacket needed to show the time period and both main characters without revealing their relationship, which E.B. Lewis painted perfectly.
