Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library BY Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Eric Velasquez

Art direction & design foR ILLUSTRATED COLLECTION OF BIOGRAPHICAL POEMS

SCHOMBURG beautifully tells the amazing story of Arturo Schomburg, who’s passion for collecting books and other historical items during the Harlem Renaissance lead to the creation of what is now the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. The book covers a huge amount of information, which required a complicated design approach. The page layout and illustration treatment balance the biographical story of Schomburg while also illustrating the historical events recorded in his collection of artifacts. Each illustration was meticulously researched and the end result is an illuminating and breathtaking book.

SCHOMBURG won a 2018 Walter Award, a SCBWI 2018 Golden Kite Award, and is a 2018 ALSC Notable Children’s Book.
